LAKE SHERIFF'S UNDERCOVER DETECTIVES CHARGE 14 IN CONNECTION WITH ILLEGAL ITEMS BEING BROUGHT INTO THE LAKE COUNTY DETENTION CENTER IN OPERATION HIDE AND SEEK

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office recently concluded a year-long investigation that resulted in 14 individuals being charged with various crimes related to introducing illegal items into a detention facility.

The Sheriff’s Office launched the investigation in December 2019 when information was developed that indicated there were several inmates in the Lake County Detention Center who were working with people on the outside to bring narcotics and tobacco items into the facility to be sold to other inmates.

Throughout the investigation, detectives were able to utilize several investigative techniques that led to the interception of numerous types of contraband destined for the detention center. The items would typically be contained in pieces of trash that were intentionally discarded by the inmates’ friends or relatives in areas where the inmate work crews would be cleaning.

One of the 14 being charged is Jimmy Ankrom, a corrections officer who worked in the detention center from July 2019 to October 2020, who helped get the items brought into the facility. He was terminated as a result of his arrest. In addition, detectives purchased drugs from drug dealers outside the jail who were involved in this operation and ultimately charged them as well.

During the operation, detectives seized tobacco, marijuana, methamphetamine, and suboxone that was all bound for the detention facility.

This operation was a collaborative effort between the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the City/County Investigative Bureau, which consists of the Eustis, Clermont, and Leesburg Police Departments, and federal law enforcement partners.
